Virginia Trying to Clamp Down on Payday Lenders

Warren County – Officials here are getting together with other county representatives and asking Virginia State legislators to pass strict laws that would put an end to predatory payday loan type lending in the state.
In a meeting on Tuesday night, Warren County officials all agreed to ask Gov. Bob McDonnell to consider enacting new laws at the next legislative meeting.
At the meeting on Tuesday, Assistant County Attorney Dan Whitten said, “currently, there are no businesses in Warren County using usurious lending practices such as cash-and-go or payday loans.” Even thought there are no businesses to regulate at the moment, county officials want to deter any from opening up in the area.
Warren County is asking for an interest rate cap of 36 percent including all fees, also restricting access to borrowers banking accounts on all payday loans.
